Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) contain about 3 to 5 milligrams of mercury. Mercury is harmful to the environment and is associated with water, fish and food contamination which in turn can cause adverse effects in humans. Some of the more recent CFL models have as little as 1 to 3 milligrams of mercury. We highlight these lower mercury bulbs whenever possible.
While the above amount of mercury is much less than the toxic emissions caused by traditional fluorescent bulbs, fluorescents should be recycled, rather than disposed of with other trash. In many places around the U.S. , such as California, it is illegal to throw fluorescent bulbs away.
If you cannot find a local recycling center in your community we provide you with CFL recycling kits from Veolia Environmental Services, a specialized company in the field of recycling that will process the fluorescent lamps properly.
