Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into electricity using wind turbines. As a plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, and clean energy source, wind power reduces greenhouse gas emissions when it displaces fossil fuel-derived electricity. Typically, on-grid wind turbines are installed at homes or businesses to generate power; at times where there is insufficient wind, these locations can tap into the grid of the local utility company. Surplus electricity is sent back into the grid and the homeowner or business owner is compensated. Rural or remote areas are commonly off-grid.
